Rescue Knife Comparison Page

Please note: This page contains personal observations only and is purely opinion.

The top knife is the new "Land and Sea" rescue knife from Cold Steel and the middle image is the SP14SBK Spyderco full size rescue and the bottom image is the new SP45SBK Spyderco Rescue Jr..

SIMILARITIES:
All three of these knives are constructed in Japan and are remarkable similar in many ways. The handle and blade materials are the same and the construction is so similar that one would be blind not to assume they came out of the same factory in Japan. This is not a negative, since they are some of the best made knives in the world with rock-solid, fast and smooth action and great steel (AUS8 Stainless). Handle material is Zytel® which is a popular material for knife handles and is described as "glass filled Nylon®." It is both light and strong and the surfaces are checkered for better gripping. All have lanyard holes in the handle. The full size Spyderco Rescue has a cutout in the handle (not to be used as a shackle key-according to Spyderco). All are configured for "tip up" carry, meaning that when they are carried in the pocket using the pocket clip, the pivot end of the knife is down and therefore the tip of the blade is "up."

DIFFERENCES:
There are a few differences. First, the obvious ones: the Cold Steel model is larger. The blade is slightly longer and is considerably wider. Its handle is also "beefier" and it is heavier. The serration pattern is also different with the Cold Steel model having a more aggressive pattern of serrations which may, through time, prove more of a chore to resharpen. The Spyderco models have their trademark thumb hole opening system and some prefer this and some prefer a stud as is on the Cold Steel. We find the thumb stud to be a faster opening device. The new Rescue Jr. is obviously smaller, it is much lighter and had a metal pocket clip (the other two have a plastic clip molded on as part of the handle) which is reversible for left-handed individuals. The metal clip is an advantage, in our opinion, in the long run because this is usually the part that will fail first through time.

CONCLUSIONS:
These are all high quality knives and your particular choice should be based on size and style considerations only. All open very rapidly and should work well under a variety of conditions. The steel sharpens easily and holds a great edge and the handle construction is very solid and so any of these should give years of dependable use. The prices are similar with the full size rescue from Spyderco coming in at $39.95, the Rescue Jr. with the metal reversible pocket clip at $44.95 and the Cold Steel at $49.95, and so your choice should be based of features and not the slight difference in price.
